UNIT INVESTMENT TRUSTS
A Unit Investment Trust (UIT) is a professionally selected, diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, or other securities that remains fixed throughout the life of the trust. Investors purchase units of the trust, which represent an undivided ownership in the entire portfolio.
Unlike mutual funds, whose portfolios are actively managed and continuously changing, UIT portfolios generally remain fixed for a specific length of time (maturity). These maturities range from as little as one year to as long as thirty years, based on the securities in the portfolio. UITs combine some of the advantages of individual securities – fully invested, known portfolio, and daily liquidity; along with some of the advantages of funds – diversification, convenience, low minimum investment, professional selection, and reinvestment options. By combining these advantages, UITs enable an investor to get the best of both worlds in one convenient package.
